The Youngstown Press Club welcomes Wall Street Journal assistant editor Paul Beckett, who is in charge of efforts to free Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained in Russia on March 29, 2023, while doing his job as a journalist. Mr. Beckett will speak about Evan, who he is and what's being done to secure his release.
Brenda Linert, editor of The Vindicator and the Tribune Chronicle, will lead a conversation with Paul and moderate questions from the audience.
The evening will be introduced by Lisa Bannon, a Youngstown area native who spent more than 30 years at The Wall Street Journal as an editor and senior reporter.
A reception will follow in the Flad Pavilion featuring light refreshments and a cash bar.
To further support journalists' rights, the Youngstown Press Club will make a contribution to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a non-profit organization which promotes press freedom worldwide.

Paul Beckett is assistant editor at The Wall Street Journal working full-time on the paper's efforts to secure Evan Gershkovich's release.
Prior to this role, Paul was the Washington bureau chief, responsible for news across politics and government, economics, national security, the Supreme Court, financial regulation and the intersection of business and Washington.
Born and bred in Scotland and a graduate of Edinburgh University, Paul has been WSJ's Asia editor and South Asia editor, and started the paper's India Real Time blog and india.wsj.com.
Brenda Linert is director of Government Affairs and Community Impact for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and former editor of the Tribune Chronicle and The Vindicator. She has won numerous AP awards for her work as a reporter and editor. Brenda holds a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's in communications from Kent State University.
A member of the Board of Governors of the Youngstown Press Club. Brenda also serves as an Associated Press Media Editors board member and is marketing chairwoman for the Junior League of the Mahoning Valley, where she produces the organization's monthly newsletter.
Lisa Bannon is a contributing writer at the The Wall Street Journal in New York. She was a senior reporter and editor there for more than three decades.
A native of the Youngstown area, Lisa began her career at the Tribune Chronicle in Warren. She began at the Wall Street Journal as Italy correspondent in Milan in 1992. She covered the “Tangentopoli” political corruption scandals, the 1990s crackdown on the Sicilian Mafia, and Italian culture and society.
She became a senior special writer in Los Angeles in 1995 before moving to New York in 2004 to become bureau chief for the retail and fashion group. After several years as a page one editor, she was named coverage chief of the Journal's Life & Arts section.
Her work as a reporter and editor has been recognized by the New York Press Club, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) and The Deadline Club, and she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 2011.

From the WSJ: Evan is a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained in Russia on March 29, 2023, while doing his job as a journalist. He is the American-born son of Soviet-era emigres to the U.S. Evan learned Russian from his parents and built a career as a journalist focused on the region. He joined the Journal in January 2022 and before that reported from Moscow for Agence France Press and the Moscow Times. Evan is a gifted journalist who has reported extensively on Russia, illuminating developments on the ground at a crucial time.
Evan has been in Russia’s notorious Lefortovo prison since March 2023, largely cut off from the world. He spends 90% of his day in a small cell. The State Department has declared Evan wrongfully detained and President Biden has promised his family he would bring Evan home. A Russian court on Jan. 26 extended his pre-trial detention for another two months. It is unclear when he will face trial.
